A Clinico-Legal Study on the Mentally Ill Criminals Sentenced to Rehabilitative Custudy by the Court

Abstract
The Author have studied 145 clinico-legal evaluations among 570 mentally ill criminals who had sentenced to rehabilitative custody by the court during the period of Dec. 8, 1980 to Dec. 31, 1986. Result were as follow: 1. Male criminals were more frequent than females, male to female ratio was 4.4:1. Most of subjects were between twenties to fourties(80.7%), especially in thirties by range of age, unemployed and laborer(68.2%) by occupation, lower class(81.1 %) by social class. 2. Psychiatric evaluation of mentally ill criminals was requested largely by prosecutor (61.0%). Most of it was performed by admission(88.0%) and duration of about one month (80.6%). 3. In the criminal characteristics, most of the criminal contents were murder(49.6%) and assault, destruction(23.7%) and majority of criminal acts were committed by the schizophrenics(80.0%). In the characteristics of murder or violence, the victims were familiar and intimate, especially family member and most of those took place in offender¡¯s house or near the house. 4. In author¡¯s opinion, adequate treatment and rehabilitation should be established for the prevention of mentally ill criminals through adequate mental health act, increased number of bed, training of professional member and education of mental illness to the people.
